Measuring Electric Fields and Non-covalent Interactions Using the Vibrational Stark Effect

Fried, S. D.; Boxer, S. G. Acc. Chem. Res. 2015, 48, 998-1006. [DOI]

This review explains the vibrational Stark effect in broad strokes to make its relevance accessible to chemists of all specialties. We focus here on how vibrational probes can be used to measure electric fields, and how electric fields can provide an organizing framework for describing intermolecular interactions in a quantitative way.
