Altering the electron donating/withdrawing character of the beta-positions of a porphyrin do not substantially change its catalysis toward hydrogen peroxide dismutation, suggesting both compound I formation and disappearance are partially rate-limiting. Increasing steric bulk around the porphyrin was found to have the greatest catalytic effect.
